The University of Dayton Center for Cybersecurity and Data Intelligence has been awarded a grant of $193,981 by the Ohio Third Frontier. This funding will be used to strengthen cybersecurity education, equip law enforcement to combat cybercrime on the dark web, and meet the increasing demand for cybersecurity and software engineering experts.

With the goal of creating a safer online environment, the center plans to develop an engaging and interactive 3D application called CyberSafe. This application will provide cybersecurity education to students in kindergarten through 12th grade, helping them identify and respond to online risks such as phishing and malicious websites. Through virtual reality technology, students will immerse themselves in a virtual environment, earning rewards and competing in quizzes to enhance their knowledge. By gamifying cybersecurity education, the University of Dayton aims to make learning enjoyable and effective for young learners. The CyberSafe app is scheduled to launch in June 2025.

In recognition of the need for law enforcement to combat cybercrime on the dark web, the University of Dayton will provide free training programs for police officers. These programs will equip officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to investigate crimes in the hidden corners of the internet. Training modules will cover encryption technologies, anonymization tools, and tactics used by cybercriminals to conceal their identities. By empowering law enforcement with cyber skills, communities can be better protected from cyber threats. The training program is set to commence in the fall.

Meeting the Demand for Cybersecurity Experts through Collaborative Programs

To address the growing demand for cybersecurity and software engineering experts, the University of Dayton has partnered with the University of Cincinnati to develop a joint program. This program will focus on formal methods, advanced math, and logic techniques used to identify and prevent software programming errors. By training more professionals in this field, the ability of hackers to compromise systems and steal information can be reduced. Additionally, the program aims to create a more diverse and inclusive cybersecurity workforce by engaging and guiding students from elementary to high school through seminars, workshops, and summer research programs.

Equipping Professionals with Cybersecurity Credentials and Online Training Modules

The University of Dayton will also launch a cybersecurity bootcamp to provide professionals seeking career advancement with industry-recognized credentials. This intensive training program will equip individuals with certifications such as CompTIA Security+ and CompTIA CySA+. By offering these credentials, the university aims to meet the demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals in the industry.

In addition, a cyber education fellow will develop online training modules on various cybersecurity topics for the Ohio Cyber Range Institute. These modules will cover subjects such as cyber hygiene, internet safety, coding and encryption, and malware and cyber attacks. By providing accessible online training, the University of Dayton aims to empower individuals to enhance their cybersecurity knowledge and skills.

Promoting Cybersecurity Education and Training for a Safer Digital Future

As a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense, designated by the National Security Agency and U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the University of Dayton is committed to promoting cybersecurity education and training. The recent funding from the Ohio Third Frontier will enable the university to further its mission of creating a safer digital environment for individuals, communities, and organizations.
