Astronomers have recently discovered Asteroid 2024 CB1, a member of the Apollo group, which is set to pass by Earth today. Despite its close proximity, there is no need to worry about a potential collision. This 160-foot-wide asteroid poses no threat to our planet.

Asteroid 2024 CB1 will come within a distance of 1.4 million kilometers from Earth, traveling at an astonishing speed of 63,174 kilometers per hour. To put this into perspective, that's almost as fast as a space shuttle! However, it's important to note that even though it is classified as a Near-Earth Asteroid, there is no risk of it actually colliding with our planet.

In terms of size, Asteroid 2024 CB1 is approximately 160 feet wide, making it comparable to the size of an aircraft. While this may seem large, NASA has not classified it as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid. Only celestial objects larger than 492 feet that come within a distance of 7.5 million kilometers from Earth are given this designation.

Asteroid 2024 CB1: A Familiar Visitor

Interestingly, this is not the first time that Asteroid 2024 CB1 has come close to Earth. Its first recorded close approach was on January 28, 1905, when it passed by at a distance of approximately 51 million kilometers. After today's encounter, it will make another close approach on July 10, 2025, at a distance of around 62 million kilometers.

It's worth noting that these close encounters with asteroids are not uncommon. In recent weeks, there have been several asteroids that have passed by Earth, some even closer than the Moon. While most of them pose no threat, space agencies like NASA continue to monitor their orbits for any potential collision scenarios.
